Accessibility statement

We want this website to be usable by everyone, including people with visual, motor or cognitive impairments. This page describes what we have done, what we know is not perfect yet, and how to reach us.

Standard

The site is designed to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines WCAG 2.1, level AA — the technical basis of the European standard EN 301 549 and of Directive (EU) 2019/882 (the European Accessibility Act), transposed in Bulgaria by the Act on Accessibility Requirements for Products and Services (State Gazette 31/2025, in force since 28 June 2025). Where practical we also apply WCAG 2.2 criteria (for example minimum target size and visible focus).

What has been done

  • Text contrast of at least 4.5:1; “High contrast” and “Larger text” modes from the “Accessibility” button at the top of every page (the setting is remembered on your device).
  • Full keyboard operation: “Skip to content” link, visible focus outline, menu, gallery, enlarged view (Esc closes) and forms.
  • Every painting has a text description (title, dimensions, medium); decorative images are hidden from screen readers.
  • The automatic slideshow on the home page can be paused with a button and does not move when the system “reduce motion” setting is on.
  • Text can be enlarged to 200 % without loss of content; the layout adapts to phones, tablets and computers.
  • Forms have labels, error and confirmation messages announced to screen readers.
  • The language of each page is declared (Bulgarian/English) and the switcher leads to the same page in the other language.

Known limitations

  • The downloadable PDF catalogue is a visual edition and is not fully accessible to screen readers — all of its information is also available as web pages.
  • Paintings are described by title, dimensions and medium; more detailed descriptions of the depicted scenes are being added gradually.
